Aluminum
Common Uses
- Transportation: Used in automobiles, airplanes, and high-stress aerospace applications (via alloys like 6061 and 7075).
- Packaging & Construction: Used for beverage cans, food foil, window frames, and building siding.
- Electrical: Used in wiring, heat sinks, and power line conductors.
Production and Recycling
- Extraction: Found naturally in ores like bauxite, refined via the Bayer process to make alumina, and reduced to pure metal via the energy-intensive Hall–Héroult process.
- Recycling: Recycling aluminum saves about 95% of the energy required for primary extraction from bauxite.
